...and away we go

To escape the heat advisory yesterday, we opted out of Sea World and into the comforts of a cool, dark movie theater. It was Kennedy's first movie-going experience and what a thrill it was. Just driving up to the mololithic suburban 14-screen theater was as exciting as seeing Shamu! Then there was the consession stand, the bag of popcorn as large as her torso, the ginormous movie displays (when did those things start taking up a football stadium? I remember when they were merely life-size.) The best part of the whole day had to be the darkened theater with lighted steps. Ah, yes, the steps. Lighted. She wanted to go all the way to the top she loved the steps so much. She finally decided on her seat -- the first one on the end, toward the back. So cute; so innocent. She was quiet and sat still for the whole movie, and gorged herself on the greasy popcorn. The film itself brought on a few laughs, as well as some cover-your-eyes moments for her. It also had the usual dose of morals and values. I doubt it would have been as good at home on DVD, but it sure beat melting into a concrete stadium seat that smells of fish and sunblock. I do hope that she forgets seeing the preview for Disney's new blockbuster -- The Princess and the Frog.....

Boggle Blogger

No, it's not news or noteworthy, but just an interesting tid-bit: our local antique "mall" had a "Vintage" Boggle game from 1980, all pieces entact, for $5!! I bought it!
My grandma, mom and I used to play this all the time. Now Kennedy is enjoying it. She prefers lining up all the letters in a neat row on the table....
I love the box art -- the finger nails, the Steno pad, the 80s font. They just don't make 'em like they used to....

We're on our way to becoming a regular Partridge Family

This was our weekend -- us playing instruments for which we have no real skill. Featuring: Jimmy on Guitar (Turner), Assilem on Drums (Melissa), and Kennedy on vocals. She actually did pretty good with "We Got the Beat" by the Go-Gos and "So What'cha Want" by the Beastie Boys. Last night I heard her humming Beck's "E-Pro" in the bath tub - so cute!

What we've been up to lately, or Why I think my daughter is so amazing and can't stop talking about her

In addition to the usual play dates, we've been spending a lot of time as a family in front-yard water holding water balloon fights, sometimes with friends and neighbors. This has proven to be a great aggression-reliever, as well the perfect activity to foster vocabulary: "busted," "spigot," "arsenal." She's talking like a regular pirate these days.

Spring is almost at it's end, and with it came the last swim class. It was the first class in which I did not go IN the water with Kennedy. This does not mean I was down the street at Starbucks, but rather four feet from the waters edge, cheering her on, and holding my breath right along side her. They start each class with a baptismal DUNK under water. With the amount of chlorine in those pools, I am surprised she didn't have pink eyes for days afterwards. I sure would have. After just the second class, we ran into a fellow swim-class mate and her mother at a restaurant. She commented that she recognized Kennedy as "the one who always volunteers to go first." That's my girl - the eager beaver. I don't know if was a love of the water, a love of learning, or just a desire to please her superiors, but it was obvious that she was teachers pet. Or trying to be anyway. Let's hope this carries through to REAL school. She'll be the one in class everyone loves to hate.

Mother's day was spent with my mother, who hadn't seen Kennedy since September. A lot has changed since then. Instead of ABC's and Patty Cake it's now Knock Knock jokes and pinkie promises. And mother's day couldn't have been more pleasant than that. (Despite the debacle of a dinner out at a very crowded Salt Lick in Round Rock, but that's another story.)

Our most recent adventure was taking our daughter with us to a dinner party at one of Turner's friends' houses. He and his wife just returned from living in Japan. The first thing they said when we came in the door was "She is so big!" I think they were expecting a toddler, not, as the wife put it, a girl who looks like she should be in elementary school. She was a wonderful host, cooked a lovely Japanese dinner on the table, and made her own miso and sushi. It was delightful. So fun, in fact, that I finally got that electric skillet I've been wanting for pancakes, because now we cook on the table, and who doesn't love that?!? I'm just pleased that Kennedy was on her best behavior and actually ate, kiddie chopsticks and all. She was thrilled to receive some Hello Kitty Japanese cookies and to play with their new kitten. The little guy was no bigger than my foot, and ran out to greet her as soon as she came in and they pretty much played together the whole evening. By the time we left, we wanted a kitten, and they wanted a child. If only it was this easy HALF of the time. Then, we'd want another kid too!

It skips a generation

My daughter, 3 and my mom, 6. The nuts don't fall far from the tree, do they?

Family Portrait

Kennedy drew this family portrait at school. I'm glad her teachers know her daddy's name lest they think Turner is mommy's new boyfriend or something. I think it's especially cute that she thought to include her doggies too.

Never a Dull Moment

Austin is such a great city for kids. (And adults with kids.) Let’s take a moment to daydream about all the places we could be right now: A week ago we saw the Cinderella production at the Scottish Rite Children’s theatre downtown -- very cute. Kennedy broke the hush of the theatre by yelling out “It’s Lucifer! [the cat].” A few months ago it was Peter Pan at the same theatre. Come to think of it, she yelled out during the first few moments of that play too with, “They’re flying to Neverland!” This girl really gets into her fantasy worlds -- looks like we have an actress on our hands.
Other events we’ve recently gone to, as I think of them are:

Ice Cream Festival
Kite Festival
Art Festival
Splash Park
Austin Children’s Museum
Natural Gardener
Radijazz
Ruta Maya
Round Rock Express Baseball Game
Gattiland
Fourth of July Parade
Kiddie Acres
Little Buckaroo Ranch
Ready Set Play
And of course all the pools, parks, trails, wildflower fields and pumpkin patches.

Next I have to decide between Cirque, Very Hungry Caterpillar, and the lighting of the Macy’s Christmas tree at our new swanky outdoor mall. More than likely we’ll end up doing all three.

Three is a magic number

Kennedy is soon to be the last only child of all her three-year-old classmates. (Congratulations to the mommy-to-be, if she's reading!) The choice of whether or not to have another baby has been one of much discussion in our household. Just as a couple is never "ready" to have a first baby, the thought of a sibling is just as daunting, if not more so. We've been watching this Schoolhouse Rock video lately, and I've already decided: if Kennedy remains an only child, this will be our theme song. And if Turner and I ever make a decision, or find ourselves in a "Whoops!" situation, I'll be writing about it here, I'm sure.Link
