CK, it unscrews. Hold the plastic piece at the bottom still with a pair of pliers and unscrew the bulb holder. The base will come apart so you will still have to glue / nut and bolt them together.

Before: IKEA Lampan table lamp and Dollar Store tray.
After: spray painted orange, with removable scrap paper on top = Cake Stand.
Lampshade also received a coat of paint and holds some Halloween decor.

But how did you disassemble the lamp? I can't get the electric part out!
Good question, CK. I cut the cord, as close as I could at the base. There was no easy removal of the socket. Good luck!
